Well, your clear is lacquer - as stated.
Blue metallic - might be a clue on the back, something about toluene, etc.

The clear coat has it listed. The paint lists nothing.

Make sure the clear is compatible with the color. I pulled up several data sheets at their website. Acetone and two other solvents on their acrylic lacquer, but the material was not disclosed. If the color is enamel, I'd bet the clear is not compatible. Also, nitro lacquer is not compatible with acrylic lacquer.

I will do a test tonight. I dont have any spare wood however. Do you think cardboard would work for a test?

Here we are this morning after a thick spray of the clear coat. It looks ok. The texture seems normal.

Are there specific things I should be looking for with regard to compatibility between the base and the clear?

Well, your compatibility test seems OK at first glance.
When your apply your clear, if you see crazing or cracking of the base color - stop immediately.
Then we'll figure out the next step.

If your base and clear react bad with each other, you will know pretty quick (before it dries) when it turns to cottage cheese in under 10 minutes flat. It used to be cut and dry, paint cans said lacquer or enamel right on the front, and you never mixed the two (though you could use enamel over the top of lacquer). For whatever reason, manufactures have gotten sketchy on it these days.

Finding lacquer primer in a rattle can is impossible now, for what its worth, Rustolium automotive primer will take lacquer over the top even though you cant get good info on it.

Your paint looks good!
