Post subject:  I am new to guitar building

Hi folks,

I just found this wonderful forum yesterday! I am building a few guitars this summer, I want to start out from a kit (I got the mahogany dread from stew Mac). After the kit is complete I am going to move on to trying to build a guitar from scratch (without a kit). I have acquired what I think are a lot of tools, but in reality there are a lot more things that I need. I am new to the hobby so I am starting from scratch. If you have any tools, wood, or instructional DVDs, or books relevant to instrument building will you pm me and let me know what you have that you might be willing to sell or trade?
Thanks.

Nik

Welcome you found the right place and it seems you are on the right track to become addicted to Luthiery. Looking for used tools is a great way to stock a shop. I have nothing to offer other than my regards, and good wishes for success. I also started with a kit and will finish buffing out the finish on #13 today, it has been a wonder journey.

Good luck
Fred

Welcome, Nik. You might want to post this in the Classifieds section of the forum. There is a nominal annual fee required to participate in that area, but that's where most of the buying and selling of tools and materials takes place.

You're just getting started and you plan to build a few guitars this summer? Even if you are a highly skilled woodworker with nothing else competing for your time, I would say that is a rather ambitious goal. Based on my own admittedly limited experience, I would caution against setting deadlines or targets that may compel you to rush through the process.

For me, patience is among the most difficult lessons and one that I have yet to master.

Have fun,

George, thanks for the thoughts. Admittedly I am rather ambitious, but my goal is flexible. I am not in a rush, and I want quality over quantity.
