It can be done! Woohoo!
After what seemed forever, I finally got a finish on I was happy with.
Here it is, awaiting final polish, 90 days after receiving the initial kit.

Wow, 90 days. That is really fast for your first. I hit the one year mark on my first last month and have just now sent it off to be finished. Great Job!

I have some woodworking background (cabinetry), but this is completely different....!
The serviced kit was a fantastic way to get started, if only for the initial shaping of the neck (especially with the peghead slots cut)
If I had started from scratch I probably would have just ended up with some expensive firewood...
I used 4 sources for information: OLF, Robbie's DVD, and the books by Cumpiano and Bogdanovitch.
For sure the biggest hurdle on the first build was the finish - I was looking for nice shellac amber shade for the soundboard but my shellac skills left me with a very blotchy top. After a zillion tries I sanded back to the natural colour of the Englemann Spuce, which I am liking very much. I sprayed it with EM6000 WB Lacquer.

My second build is under way, this one is from scratch - am going to try Ovankol S&B, with the E Spruce top (I loved working with the E Spruce, and it sounds great!) Just for fun I am going to try Ebony binding and headstock with a suitably dark rosette...

Well....It has only been strung up for a couple of hours but....
It sounds GREAT!
Unbelievably, I just strung it up and the action was right on; no buzzes. all good...
It has similar volume and treble as my Spruce-top Ramirez, but the bass is quite different...rounder, not quite as distinct. (same strings on both)
I am one happy builder.... bliss

And, it will only get better. Expect some pretty amazing differences in the first couple of months. Then it tapers off, but it continues to open up over a long period. Play it lots. Great job on the guitar.
