Great thread, Todd. The bench hook is one of my favorites too.

We have the students attach the cleats with a sliding dovetail joint at the school I teach at. Maybe overkill, but a good lesson on using the router table and learning the joint.

Oh, I didn't know there was a name for that jig. I used to make variants of it for fine cabinet and furniture work. Now I know what to call it!

But even better, you're showing a couple of ways it is particularly well-suited for lutherie - like trimming guitar rim ends.

I had forgotten about using a jig like this. Time to make a new one! Thanks!

Todd, am I understanding correctly that the fence should be slightly shorter than the base is wide......and you are leaving the ends of the fence slightly short of the base? I'm curious why it is left short? (I'm sure you have a reason but I can' think of one offhand) Does this cause a problem when trimming using the fence as a guide?

By the way,.......anyone have a recommendation for nice flush cut saw that could be used as shown in the pics above?

Hey Darryl,

I'm not Todd but I sent him a PM about this and here is his reply:

"Cutting the fence just slightly shorter than the base (1/64" to 1/32") prevents the plane from getting hung up on the fence while still supporting the end of the work...just works better that way."
