I'm getting ready to purchase ER25 collets for my spindle, and started to wonder.. Do I really need an entire precision collet set? Which of your collets do you use the most, and is it a waste to get the entire set, 3/32"-1/2" set? Brands I'm looking at the most are Techniks and Precise Bits, which I believe may be the same.

What Ken said. I bought good collets in those sizes and bought a 10 piece cheap Chinese set for like $30 to have for whatever.

1/2", 1/4", 1/8" and whatever the largest size you can get is (5/8" for ER25, 3/4" for ER32)

I find it simplifies my tooling collection and my toolpathing strategies if I only stock the powers of 1/2 plus the largest size I can use. Only exceptions were the 0.010" cutters I used for inlay, and drills.

If you're working metal, then it's useful to have the collet set for drills...but you could also get a drill chuck.

I buy all my collets from Maritool. Not any reason to look for a domestic supplier on tooling, unless you've got a good local distributor (who doesn't mark stuff up 40% on US prices like most Canadian distributors).
