Neck attachment screws

Hello all,

I am in need of some assistance with sourcing some neck attachment screws. My build is an electric/acoustic and the neck is an electric style bolt on neck. Simmilar to Fender with a pocket and screws that go through a plate to hold the neck in place. Due to my poor planning I need....

Brass plated, gloss finish, oval head, phillips drive, tapered under the head, 2" wood screw

I purchased the standard ones from stewmac and they are 1 3/4" and are too short (see neck attachment screws for fender for an example of what I need)!!!!

I have called allparts, stewmac, lmi, WD music, mcmaster car, fender....looked at lowes, home depot, local fastner supply houses, local specility hardware store, lee valley, .....searched on the internet.....

and can not seem to find these anywhere! Please help if you can. I can use ferrals but wanted to use the plate because it has a nice shape (not standard fender plate) and I did not want to counter sink these screws that far into the body to make it work (ugly).

I can not move forward with out these....well I can but do not want to.

Please help if you can.

Don't know the company, but go here. You have to buy 50 of them, but not too bad.  This is a marine store, so you might check West Marine.  They could have them available in smaller quantity.

Countersink your holes by 1/4 inch.

Do you have a plate?

If so, you need longer screws for sure.

Many electric guitars these days don't use the plate.

I have a plate....it is custom plate that has a sloped side so I can contour the heal for comfort. It is not a standard Fender plate. I guess I will have to order the furrels from stewmac and just cut the screws I have because , according to the site, you have to countersink the furrels 3/16". This will put my 1 3/4" screws too long. Oh well.....that is what pure custom builds do to you on the first one you build.

I've not seen ferrules here, makes some sense.

Cutting off a screw is not biggie. Just put a couple nuts past the cut, file the ends slightly, then remove the nut or nuts off the bolt, that massages the threads back to near perfection.

I know these are wood screws that you are referencing. I've made 2 electrics using this method and it is quite common for Strat and Tele necks and works every time.

I am considering something a little different and wanted to get additional feedback. Instead of using wood screws for a neck attachment, has anyone ever considered installing threaded inserts in the neck tenon and attaching through the neck mortise using threaded bolts? I can see a lot of advantage in doing it this way but was wondering if there are any negatives I am missing.
