Well, last evening, the whole family was in for my birthday. I'm 56!

Kids, sons, great neices, daughter in law, me, everyone was on my computer, and now it's speechless.

I'm running Windows xP home ed, with IE browser. My ITunes works so speakers and sound card are working. I pop in a Music CD, that works too using Windows Media Player. So I have two music sources working. No sound on YouTube, at all.

Got any ideas?

Something else that happened, my speaker in the Windows tray disappeared? But under Accessories and Entertainment I have the Volume setup still, the sound was not muted and it was midway up the volume scale?

One last thing, My son uploaded some music files and doc files that his mother uses for worship prep and practice/performance. I have antivirus, but it's a possibility an invisible file has transferred and damaged my system.

I'm open to any and all ideas you come up with, thanks for your help in advance, Bruce Dickey

Hey Bruce my friend HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!

Since your sound on the computer does work with other applications the only thing that I can think of is that the volume slider on YouTube's display pages (in the browser that you use) is set to off.

Nope, thanks Hesh, nice try.

I've slid that slider up and down, and all around.

Put my right foot in and shook it all about and still nothing, nada? I even reset Internet Explorer in Advanced options, it came back clean after a couple of bootups, still no sound, and the mute buttion in the sound is unchecked, as well as the keyboard keys, it shows unmuted and volume up. Works with all other programs.

I'm thinking virus from files uploaded yesterday by my son. It of course would be hidden. Hmmmm....

Standing By, anyone have any ideas? TIA Bruce

YouTube DLs a temp file to your computer and runs from that I doubt it's from the AV!

I used to get bumps from DivX now and then, but YouTube is Flash based! Do you know what version of Flash you have?

Flash upload

Go into start/control panel check "sounds and audio devices" to see if icon check box is checked.

Happy Birthday, Bruce, and Many Happy Re-Runs!

If you are using IE-7, I never could get it to work with YouTube.  I had to switch over to Firefox, then download the plug ins to get it to work.

Billy, I have version 9 Adobe Flash Player.

Thanks Waddy, at fifty six, shucks I don't feel a bit older than fifty five, what gives? Plug-ins, hmmm, you may have something there Waddy.

I found YouTube has a helps page on no sound while video is running fine. Working through that systematically.... but it's a pain. Remove Adobe Flash, then reinstall, turn off browser, turn it back on then check YouTube. Start over...... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Computers are great when they are working. You Tube has worked fine and I'm using IE7 and Flash Player 9. It all started when my son came over and downloaded a bunch of music and docs onto my system with a thumb drive. GRRRRRRr!

Any suggestions are appreciated, Bruce

Somewhere in there is a place you can choose how the system handles certain types of files.  It could be that the download changed one of the defaults to a program that is not "Kosher" to the YouTube package.  Check under "Advanced" on "Internet Options", and look to make sure the little block for "play sound on web pages" is checked.  IE does not appear to have a place to determine what program plays what.

Bruce, I have the same thing you`re talking about and the only thing I came up with is to restart the computer. I think iTunes takes over the sound card for some reason or other. Works for me.

Oh Yeah, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Coe

Thanks Coe,
I've restarted this so many times I'm sure I've run the battery down!

Some audio is working very well. ITunes works fine, Media Player Video works too.

It's the darnedest thing for it to play the video, but just no sound..... still.... Out of ideas and frustrated, I really like to use YouTube.

I've downloaded and installed Adobe Flash over and over.

Apparently something on my computer is preventing Shockwave and Flash Players from sticking, and dismounting it.

I did a scan with Norton's and found two suspect cookies that were low risk, nothing else. Plus I keep Trend PC-cillin AV and Internet Security up and running always. That program has always let YouTube run without any difficulty

Still looking for an answer. Which may just be a new computer.... that'd be a bummer.

I have an emachine. At one point, it stopped generating sound, and I do not know why. I contacted emachine through their help chat room. One of their techs took over remote control of my machine, located some settings that were wrong and reset them, and then it worked fine. I am sure that the settings were accidentally turned off at my end, but I don't know how I turned them off or how to turn them on again. Anyway, you might try contacting a help site for the brand that you have.

I'm not horribly comfortable with these aspects of Flash but you might contact Adobe through that link I posted and ask, they're pretty good about responding.

It pretty much has to be Flash oriented if all other parts of your sound work.

Good one Bill. It's a Gateway. The last three I purchased were Dells. I'll give 'em a call on their chat line. Thanks.
