There are some risks to over humidifying a house in a cold climate. I lived in a townhouse in Chicago that was so poorly insulated that sheets of ice formed on some spots of the walls from condensation, even without extra humidification. So, if you try to bring the whole house up to 50% RH in a cold climate, you could get ice or mold. Closets are a bad spot, and we had some clothes ruined from the condensation. |

Most whole hose humidifiers won't take it much over 45%, by design. Higher than that creates all kinds of condensation problems on inside walls, windows, and exterior woodwork. Could create a big problem. |

I dont have a low humidity problem since my shop is in a basement with stone wall foundation. looks like a dungeon. In the winter it average around 50% go's to the 60's with rain and to the 70's and up in the summer so i run a dehumidfier then. In the room upstairs where I store my instruments I just run a Hot mist humidifier to keep the room around 45 to 50%. I use the hot mist ones over the cool because the filters in the cool mist don't last to long and mold builds up on the unit and does not with the hot mist ones and no filters needed. Just use filterer or distilled water. |
