This cutaway neck joint came up in the "neck joint options" thread. I do all my cutaways like this and I get asked about how to do it quite often. I put together a tutorial on how I do it here:

Cutaway Neck Joint

I'm sure there are other ways to go about it, but this works well for me.Mark

Excellent tutorial, Mark. Thanks for sharing.

Lance...Any chance that this can be added to the "Jigs & Techniques" Section? It sure would make it easier to find when needed.

Man that is a nice tutorial.  The technique is easy to follow, but shows great attention to detail.  Nice joint!

Thanks, Mark-
Great info.
I've been thinking about doing one of these for a while- perhaps your tutorial will be just the 'kick' I needed!

That looks great Mark, I have tried this just once and it didn't turn out near as pretty as yours.

Wow, don't think I'll try that one until I have fully mastered the baisc elements of guitar building...but let me assure you, I'm tucking this away in the "Luthier notes" folder in my Favorites.

Thankyou!

Thank Mark,

I just finished gluing up the sides of a cutaway but with a squared look similar to the Larrivee MODEL LV-09E. You've given some great insight to this structure and it's much appreciated. I’ll certainly give it a try in the near future.

Thanks again.

Mark, thank you again for the contour cutaway tutorial. I inquired some time ago regarding your graceful cutaways and your guidance was invaluable.I am letting you know, if I have added the image correctly, how they turn out.

I do however, begin by shaping the heel of my neck first, then transfer that shape to the headblock. I subtract the side thickness from the headblock and shape. Before assembling the side, a double check to insure the side does not exceed the neck heel, using a drop of the actual side. After assembly, I fine tune the neck heel. It works for me.

Mahalo and aloha,
Rollo

How cool to see that quote. It is one of my all time favorite books!!
I read it about 25 years ago......
