This cutaway neck joint came up in the "neck joint options" thread. I do all my cutaways like this and I get asked about how to do it quite often. I put together a tutorial on how I do it here:

I just finished gluing up the sides of a cutaway but with a squared look similar to the Larrivee MODEL LV-09E. You've given some great insight to this structure and it's much appreciated. I’ll certainly give it a try in the near future.

Mark, thank you again for the contour cutaway tutorial. I inquired some time ago regarding your graceful cutaways and your guidance was invaluable.I am letting you know, if I have added the image correctly, how they turn out.

I do however, begin by shaping the heel of my neck first, then transfer that shape to the headblock. I subtract the side thickness from the headblock and shape.Before assembling the side, a double check to insure the side does not exceed the neck heel, using a drop of the actual side. After assembly, I fine tune the neck heel. It works for me.
