Here is the 1st of 3 that I finished up for the La Conner show next week. This is my first custom shape, based on an OM B&S: Quilted Sapele Top: Torrified Sitka Spruce (Alaska Specialty Woods) Binding: Flame Maple Fretboard/Bridge: Brazilian RW Inlay/Trim: Spalted Tamarind Let me know what you think! No tint on the top, just the roast. It changes colors so much in the light |

Hello Marcus, that is a real beauty! Very nice looking woods and first class craftsmanship! I like your custom shape very much, very harmonic proportions! One thing: the guitar is so shining and glossy.....except the bridge and the fretboard. For the visual harmony I would oil/wax/polish both. I think you will be very successful in the show! Juergen |

WOW this is one beautiful guitar and great job with the anticipated color match when finish is/was applied too Marcus. You knocked it out of the park my friend! Someone is going to be one lucky person who gets this one. |

My Kindle wouldn't show the photos earlier. That's ok. It is far more amazing on the big screen of the Mac. Well done. Nice photos, I have an extremely hard time with photos. Like you said, the colors change so much. |

Excellent presentation of your skills. I love the spalted purfling strips against the maple bindings. Was it hard to bend the spalted timber? The stuff I have used before for rosettes and the like was quite soft and breakable, but at least I discovered that if you glue it back together with black glue it looks like part of the spalting. |

I used the radial purfling technique. It's the same as using shell but you use strips of wood instead (with the end grain facing up) so they snap/break into place. But yah, it breaks very easy. |

But yah, it breaks very easy. That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I agree with Terence that you have achieved a really well co-ordinated aesthetic with this instrument. With such lively quilted timber it would be easy for additional decorations to come off as “too much” - but I think you have enhanced the look in a way that is entirely complementary. Impressive. Which is exactly what you want people to think at a show! |
