My first try at a Martin Dart/Diamond. Still a little finessing to do but roughed out. It's a semblance as I chose to round it off a little rather than crisp edges although I'm still thinking about it.

Sorry this happened to you Karl it's exactly why we threw our vice like this from StewMac in the back of our "closet of doom" and never used it again because it's easy and common to bang a guitar or mando into the metal structure of the thing. Our leg vices which is what we selected, what was used in the original Gibson factory and at the Galloup School of Lutherie have had around 25,000 guitars in them and never damaged a single one. Since I suggest the leg vices over these dang things whenever it comes up I wanted to point out here is just one more of many reports that these vices make it much easier to damage an instrument. @Hesh, I'm guessing that you must be seated to use a leg vice and I'm not sure about the angle needed to allow the body to clear the bench top. A picture would be nice. So far, I haven't damaged a guitar but I'm sure I don't stick that many guitars in one as you. I'll certainly be thinking about this thread the next time I use my vice. |

This is my leg vise, I copied the one Hesh had in his old shop. Basically it’s two boards, one is fixed to the bench. My bench is standing height. Boards are connected at the bottom with decent door hinge, a bench screw does the squeezing and a single piece of leather connects the boards at the top, that protects the neck and keeps it from dropping down too far if you loosen the vice. Simple, cheap and effective.

There is nothing like having a dog friend in the shop with you we have Kibbeh Dave's dog with us every day. After my Mom died last December Kibbeh began being at my feet at all times as if she knew I was hurting. They, dogs are amazing we could learn from them. |

Adding channel switching to my 23 year 5 watt amp project. Tried it out tonight. No smoke, no sparks, makes sound, but I have a few corrections to make. My electronics bench is a pretty lean work station with all supplies and tools in easy reach. |

I have a Dumble amp kit to build perhaps later this year. Just spent $500 on NOS tubes. This is as bad as GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) now I have AAS....

Just completed this rebuilt wreck. I fixed all the broken body parts and refinished it, our own fumblefinger wired it for me. It plays great, sounds great. Super light, since it's a thin line. My little roughing plane for the inside of carved instruments is all glued up. Building a plane this way is easy. 2 triangles for the blade to rest on, and to make up the front of the plane. A piece to hold the wedge against the blade. A sole cut at the angle of the blade. The front half is cut in a rectangle so that the blade just fits. The wedge is adjusted after glue up. The slot for the blade as well. The curve matches the curve on the blade. It is about 2.5" or so. I figured it out in mm (65) because; it is SO much easier. I figured how thick the sole had to be to get the full curve; then I added 3 mm to it to get an edge on the side. Now what radius for the length would leave the same 3 mm edge? A little math, and it is about 350 mm. Using that, I find that it would cut about 11/16" deep in less than a foot. Good enough for digging out just about anything from a violin to a cello, with an archtop in-between. After I carve the small radius all the way across, I'll cut the large radius all the way across. Then bring the small radius down. Nothing has to be perfect. The edge will get small, or disappear at the ends. Saw a curve on the ends, and file it until all the curves are nice and even. It should work. Yeah, in the photo, you have to imagine the blade UNDER the wedge, and not above it. The cherry piece wasn't really big enough. It is easily scratched too. The sycamore works. I've started work on a Fleishman style jig from plans online someone here suggested. I've only begun the levelers so far. I made the 9ut of hard maple because I had it but i wish I had used the pine I have. Cutting those slots and trying to drive screws into hard maple is a bear. I went with dowels instead.
