Vacationing in Port Isabel, Texas.
Went to Boca Chico to check out Space X.
I stopped at a few lumber stores, but none had exotic Mexican species.
I was hoping to find some Ebano.

Took it to a real luthier last weekend to string it and do a general review. Although I spent hours on the frets, it required more attention. He says it sounds great (his words) so I guess I'll put a finish on it and give it to our son.

The image is not perfectly aligned so it looks a bit wonky.

You've never seen wonky, have you Gary. I looks good!

What's it made of? It looks like mahogany. I don't know anything about mandolins. The carving looks nice.

Thanks Ken. This is my first mandolin. I built a baritone ukulele before the mandolin. That was for my granddaughter and our son then requested the mandolin. I likely won't build another unless requested.

The top is sinker redwood. The back, sides, and neck are figured cherry. Fretboard and and assorted pieces are Brazilian rosewood. Peghead veneer is lacewood.

I got it back from the luthier this morning with strings and some additional fretwork. He says it sounds great but I wouldn't know the difference either way.

My next project is a J185 with walnut and redwood (not sinker).

New bench is almost done. The low ceiling in this part of my basement is useful as a go bar deck.

I'm a couple years older than Hesh, and don't feel old at all. I think of myself as mature, not old.

They looked smaller than I imagined.

I looked these guys up - they’ve been in business in India since the 80s and unapologetically so, they even have a website. I have to assume Gibson knows and doesn’t care. This thing is a 17” wide dreadnought by the way, a twelve string :D. It sounds good!

Pretty mundane stuff. Double side Mahogany/Rosewood OM with an Adi top ready for fretting then finish sanding and off to Tony F.

Applying a poly finish prior to fretting tomorrow.
Cebil is a dandy fretboard material.
Janka hardness is 3600 and I like the color.
I made two boards out of a plank I paid $16 for. Cheap is good.

This week coming up there’s four bridge reglues, neck set and refret on a J150, starting on a full strip and refin of an old ladder-braced parlour, spraying test panels for a custom tele paint job and however many setups, fret levels and sundry small repairs I can squeeze in between to keep the customers from getting antsy.

Thanks Chris, I try to keep it fun where I can.

Getting the neck off that J150 today was NOT fun and took 4 hours of gentle dry heating before it shot loose half a foot in the air with a sound like a gunshot.

But it came off clean enough that there’ll be little to no finish touchup required so I’m calling it a win. This thing has a huge 14th fret bulge though so I won’t get away without refretting it.

This J-150 had a neck angle so poor I was sure there must be some other issue - loose neck block etc - present but everything seems fine.

Hey and one of those fun moments - a guy called up with a thick Italian accent asking if I could restring his guitar. He sounded like he was calling it a “master guitar”. I figured it was some European brand I wasn’t familiar with, so I just said yeah man come down to the shop.

He turns up with one of these:

A “Chittaras De Pasta” also known as a PASTA GUITAR. The guy was a chef.

I didn’t have any 0.010” strings long enough to help him.

WOW. Seen some crazy stuff, and I do a lot of cooking - but that's a new kitchen tool on me. I used to put .010's on cheese slicers and cheese boards for friends of my mother, but this a long way from there.

See if you can find a roll of music string for the guy - maybe online? Decades ago I worked in a piano-organ store and we kept rolls of string in stock to restring the pianos we took in on trade.

I suggested he try to get some piano wire but he said he only wanted a “food safe material” … I had to shrug at that point.
