Not sure if this was already discussed. The tightness of the nuts holding the slide plates might matter a lot, but I do not know how loose is safe.

If the gibs are loose enough to detect play when pushing on the end of the drum carrier, they are too loose. This would make it nearly impossible to adjust the sander for uniform thickness across the width of the drum. It could also encourage vibration, which will cause ripples in the wood.

The owner's manual says to fully tighten the Gib bolts and then back them off 1/8 to 1/4 turn. You then tighten a lock nut on each Gib bolt to keep them where you set them. I backed mine off 1/8 turn and the mechanism slides smoothly.

Glad it worked out in the end! The rest of the good news is that, notwithstanding this problem, the other parts of a pre-Jet Performax sander are pretty solid. I have one of the closed frame pre-Jet versions (ShopPro 25), and it is built to last.
