Hi all, here are a few pics of my Flamenco Blanca build. Back and sides, Macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress), top, Engelmann Spruce, Neck, Australian Red Cedar, Rosewood bindings, Planetary pegs, 5 fan brace with closing braces, tantalones in King William Pine for top linings and macrocarpa solid strip for back linings.

Really nice. Did you make the binding/rosette?
Me likey. I had a question, why do classic guitars have the tantelones,
instead of kerfed linings?
Is it tradition, or is there another reason?
Just curious.

If you're using a solera to put a dome in the top, using tentellones allows you to let the top float on the sides (very little pressure is applied during gluing). If there are gaps between the sides and top the tentellones bridge them. Ideally tentellones should have a slight angle (we use 2 degrees) where they contact the top to conform to the dome created by the solera.

Hi Alan,
Thanks. the main reason I use tantelones on the top for a flamenco is based on the sound I am trying to achieve. The old adage that a guitar must be better because it has lots of sustain (which isn't necessarily true anyway) is the opposite when designing and building a flamenco. The style of playing a flamenco demands very quick, crisp notes and you want to do everything to reduce sustain. Reduced weight is also a target as the lighter the guitar is, the quicker the sound (generally). So, this build comes in at 1091g (2.4 lbs) which is under my target maximum weight of 1.2 - 1.3 kg.

oops, didn't answer this bit

I bought the straight strips and then cut them up into small sections to make the rosette. It was fiddly but a start to making one completely on my own (which will happen)

Thanks guys for the tantelone info.
Lighter/faster decay, very interesting.
I'm trying to build with less bass, and quicker decay, for recording purposes, so,
I'll put that one in my thought bucket.
