I want to put an explosion proof fan in my finishing booth, but I do not want to spend a $1000.

I thought I could find a fan that was driven by a pulley. Then I could have the motor outside the booth. Something smaller than 24"x 24."
I did some looking around and did not see anything.

Any ideas?

Found my certified explosion proof fan on craigslist. $300 for a fan that cost $1800 new and it wasn't used that hard.

Man, that's a good deal; I check craigslist periodically and never find anything. Maybe I will set up an automatic search.

I got a 12" explosion proof fan made by Dayton off of ebay for $250. They're out there.

For many years I used an old restaurant type belt driven squirrel cage fan. That way the motor was external. If there is any kind of metal recycling near you, you might find one. They are often thrown away during demolition. When I moved my shop I bought an official explosion proof fan from Graingers for about $500.00 because it was smaller and easier to install. The squirrel cage worked just fine. Good luck!--Bob

It is NOT UL Rated but the specs are the same as an explosion proof fan ( aluminum fan blades that do not create sparks, and non exposed wires.)

I bought this about 3 years ago and it works quite well. My spray booth is 8' X 8' and this fan was a bit too much for the square foot of my small booth so I put a variable speed controller in and I run it about 1/2 speed which works very well.

I have a fan that blows filtered air into the booth. I am looking for a way to vent it out. Would you fill safe having fumes being suck across this motor? There has to be sparks on a running electric motor....right

Or you can rebuild/build your own with a detached motor. I looked for months for a "deal" and couldn't find one so I bought a $100 attic fan from Home Depot and rebuilt the guts using the fan blade, made a new shaft with pillow block bearings and new pulleys for the fan shaft and motor. I first tried to use the little motor that came with it but it was too small, so bought a new 1/2hp. All together, I've probably got $250 in it. I also rewired the light switch and plug to mount on the outside of the building. It's best not to turn the light on/off while your spraying or shortly after.

The motor on this fan is completely sealed so no air gets into the motor itself. I am quite safety conscious so that was a big concern I had. After I bought it I was curious so I pulled it apart to see.

I have a filter box I made to filter the air before it gets to the fan so I am not putting over spray into the outside air.

I also do not keep the fan in place so I can close up the hole when not in use since my shop is humidity controlled I didn't want outside air coming into my shop.

I will tell you that I do have to change the filter fairly often but I use the cheapest ones I can find. The filter also helps with my peace of mind since this fan is not certified as "explosion" proof.

But until I can afford a few hundred dollars for a certified fan this works great.

I’m always surprised what people are willing to accept as “ok” when setting up for spraying.

Either push the air through the booth so the air flow doesn’t pass by the fan at all (positive air pressure system) or spend the coin on a proper set up.

Guarantee you’re insurance company will be laughing all the way to the bank if you happen to have blown up your house/shop without the proper rated equipment.

One of the biggest reasons I’m not going to be doing my own finish any more. I don’t want the risk involved with putting down a finish I want on my guitars.

Yeah, a 1/25 hp motor ought to move a lot of air. Probably one or two cups per hour.

It's not advertised as explosion proof but it's a TEFC motor. I also removed all switches and outlets from my booth and built enclosures around the lights.

Did u switch to nitro?


I’ve sprayed nitro on 7 of the 11 guitars I’ve finished myself.
Personally I like nitro over any of the water based lacquers I tried (3 guitars from em6000)

Even though I was set up with an explosion proof fan and had my switch and lights sealed off, I was always nervous every time I turned the fan on, even a few days after spraying with the off gassing fumes in the booth.

I never did have any issues but the thought was always in the back of my mind... the what if...

I’ve done a couple of nitro touch ups but I normally spray poly.

No way

If it will move 600 cfm( which is not unreasonable) it might work fine for a small spray booth spraying 1 guitar at a time. A 20 inch box fan will move about 2500 cfm.
