Just got the first pore filler application on this guitar. First good look at what the sipo back and sides will look like under the finiish.

Today I glued the rims on this one. I also applied another coat of finish to the octave mandolin which I sold before it had any finish on it.

Started my first build on my own....at least for now....cut this and thicknesses it out of this old logImage

Having finished two guitars at the same time at the end of 2018, 2019 will start with some overdue minor shop improvements:

1. Reflattening my laminated maple benchtop (they can warp a little over time)
2. Building a stand-alone go bar deck (I’ve been using a knock down version on my bench)
3. Building a stand-alone rolling clamp rack stand for the go bar deck (excited about this)
4. Building a more organized tonewood storage cubbie
5. Tweaking my Christmas indulgence: a router lift (an expensive convenience)
6. Rebuilding my motorized dish sander (improved design)
7. Tweaking my 12” disc sander to use Kevin Ryan style sanding templates (nearly done)
8. Building a downdraft table (unreasonably overdue)
9. Finding just the right kind of foam for using my twin screw vise to hold guitars like a Troji (I’ve been having a Goldilocks experience so far; everything is either too rigid or too soft)
10. Jettison some stuff that just takes up space without contributing (Yes, I’m looking at you, fingerboard compound radius jig that never worked right)

Wow, that’s a long list! Maybe I will get back to building guitars by 2020.

I rebuilt my shop in 2016/17 including changing some of my machines to better fit my actual workflow. Took about 3 months longer than planned. It was well worth the effort. You'll be glad in the long run.

My goal this year is to finish my first acoustic guitar, which I started September of 2017. It has been a long haul, but I missed being able to start on the top and back in the winter of 2017 when the humidity was low in my home. I have no humidity control, so I basically had to wait until winter last year to start on the top. I am in a mad rush right now to finish the bracing on top and back and close the box while I have the opportunity.

Here are a couple closer shots of the back. I'm just finishing up applying the finish. I've seen this figuring referred to as vein figuring. The wood has a 3D look to it that isn't really captured in the photos.
