Quick one sorry. Am doing double thickness solid mahogany linings. I should have glued in the first lining, cut gaps for the vertical reinforcements, glued the side reinforcements in, then glued the second lining over the top. Unfortunately I forgot to do the side reinforcements and glued the second lining in. Sides are fairly flat sawn d spruceana at about .80 so I'm pretty sure I should have side reinforcements

I'd just do the reinforcements now, and add a third lining layer over them.

Make the vertical reinforcements however you want, cut the lining and glue the reinforcements in. Make the tops of the reinforcements the same thickness of the linings so it won't telegraph through the top. It will be fine, I've done it this way. In my case I care more that the reinforcements go the full height of the sides, the fact that the linings are interrupted doesn't seem to make any difference (think tentellones) Or, laminate a third layer on the linings

Thanks all. I should have said I've only glued the second lining onto one side of the back edge of the rim.

The side reinforcement strips would be 4mm thick if I did a third laminate. Seems pretty chunky or is that all to the good?

The middles don't have to be that thick if you would prefer them to be thinner. Around 2mm is what mine are in the middle, ends match the linings. Here's what I did on one basically to recover from forgetting to glue in my usual fabric reinforcements.Image

That is a neat solution! Is that d spruceana too?

Wasn't sure of the best solution for me so left it to work on the neck.

Steve, good recovery. Are those Ryan's linings? They are very nice looking

Yes, those are Ryan's A5 linings. I had wanted to try them so I ordered a set for that project. I do like them, they are very easy to use and they do look nice. A minor disadvantage is that the sides are not quite as stiff as they are when I use my usual reverse-kerf linings, of course that doesn't really matter once the top and back are on. I have another set of A5s and will use them on my next project mostly because they do look good, are so easy to use and they are sufficiently stiff as long as you use a mold when you glue on the top and back.

Maybe the reason I forgot to put in my reinforcement strips was that I was in a hurry to try out the A5 linings :?
