If you mean the fancier version of an L00 then the grellier plan is good and free to download.

Yeah. Some of the later larger models were called l1 as well. Ken at kmg kits had a template but he sadly died recently and i don't know what is happening to his business.

That is a loss to be sure; I got lots of good stuff from him on this forum. I wasn’t on his forum but I bet people here were. Can someone ask there if the template is still available?

The Guild of American Luthiers website has plans for a Gibson L-0 which I think may have the body shape you have in mind, but I don't know if it's body size you're looking for.

(Plan #6)

The 0 guitars look like mini OMs
I’m looking for the one with a much more rounded lower bout

Looks to me like that's the same body shape as in the GAL Plan #6:

That body shape is the 1925-1929 L body. It was changed to the more modern shape in 1929 and used until - I believe - 1942. Around the time of the transition they used 12, 13, and 14 frets, 2 different scale lengths, a couple of bridge designs, ladder, H, and X bracing, and at least 2 different soundhole sizes. They built guitars to this shape at the request of Nick Lucas as late as 1935.

Some of Orville's hand carved guitars where close to this shape, the J-165, J-185, J-200 and super 400 were larger versions, the LG-2 3/4 size and the Les Paul are smaller versions. And many of their hollow body electrics have this lower bout too. Lovely and my favorite.

I just strung up this 13 fretter in all-Alaskan Yellow Cedar last night. John Hall at Blues Creek sent me a cardboard 1/2 shape that I made my mold from. I bet he would sell that same piece to you.

Ed

Ed, that is just exactly my kind of guitar. 13 frets, eh? I think I would be completely lost.

Which bracing did you use? Any progress pics? SMS, sorry about the thread snatch but that is just too cool.

SMS

I am the original owner of a 1974 000-28, much like an OM, and it is really a quite different guitar. Much smaller, not as much volume.

I have built 3 to this shape, all x-braced. The maple guitar sound very smooth and is very well balanced. The mahogany 4-7/8" deep, small soundhole version that looks about like the vintage shot that was posted. She has a bit of bass to her - like you would expect from the smaller hole, but really sounds like mahogany. This one is cedar all around, with laminated cedar and osage orange braces (like a Larson) and is still fresh so will change. It is a little heavy on the midrange, but is very crisp. It also has as much sustain as my 000-28, and is the loudest of the 3 - impressively loud at this point.

Freeman - I posted this starting in August under Doc-U-Build, and just finished the thread a couple of days ago. My daughter (an amazing player) is visiting this weekend, and I will try to get a video of her playing, and I will post it along with some beauty shots soon.

SMS - I love this shape and size and am sure you will too. Perfect couch guitar.

Ed

Wonderful, Mr. Minch - I love that shape!

On the L-1, it's interesting to note that according to Mr. Gruhn, the guitar was built as an archtop from 1902 to 1925, then in the same general shape and as a flattop from 1926 to 1929...it is my favorite shape for a small guitar, and one of the first things I did after inventorying the shop's drawings was to make a copy of the tracings of the 1928 Nick Lucas made when the guitar was in for neck reset, refret, and new bridge. Really a 'PJ" - as in 'Petite Jumbo' if we consider an SJ/MJ/LJ series as J-165, J-185, J-200; the 00 and 000/OM are significantly larger guitars, with the later L-0 and L-00 closer to the Martin 00 than the early L-1, L-0, and Nick Lucas Special.

Here is a size comparison for you. On the left is the Mahogany Nick Lucas copy at 4-7/8" thick with the small soundhole. On the right is the Maple version. In the middle is a J-185 made of Scottish Oak.

Second picture is of the backs. If I build the 185 again I will slightly round the area under the neck - it is too flat.

Third picture is the Nick on the right next to a Nick made by another maker whose name I have unfortunately forgotten. It was in my daughter's shop for a little work. It is 13 fret with a large sound hole.

Prettiest instruments around, IMHO

Ed

So I’ve ordered the plans from guild, but have yet to receive them . It’s been a week.

Also, does anyone know what size pearl dots is appropriate for the fingerboard?
Looks like about 8mm? But hard to tell from pics

Hey snowmansnow how’s the build coming along? I’m looking to do something similar and just ordered an L-0 plan from LMI and Georgia Luthier Supply. How far have you gotten?
