Post subject:  Black Mesquite Fingerboards?

I found a couple of nice black mesquite boards at Woodcraft. Any reason I couldn't use them for fingerboards. Untraditional, I know. But, so what? Possible candidates for ebonizing...? [I also have another board for bridges...]

If you don't darken them somehow, or put a finish on them (fender style) they might get kind of grimey looking.

Worth a shot. Looks interesting, too.

Those are really beautiful. On my IPhone, I can’t tell if that is flame or cuts from running the wood through a planer at a high rate. I, for one, would love to see it as a fretboard. No reason to dye it. Otherwise, just use ebony.

Steve,
Here’s two Mesquite boards unfinished with Howards wax n feed, and one with a couple of coats of poly.

Dan, Those fingerboards are beautiful. And so is the back strap. Do you like the poly or the Howard's better? Either way, it looks like they should make fine fingerboards.

Heath, That is curl...

Yeah, those are gorgeous. Don’t dye ‘em!

I like the feel of the Howards better than the poly.
I’ve never come across curl, only very fine rays.
Mesquite is one of the most stable hardwoods. It’s hard but machines well.
Your boards look very nice!
