Here's a WAY to short "Field Trip" from PBS on Larson Guitars at Gryphon Music. Not much info, but was interesting that Larson's got credit for turning gut string guitars into steel string on a large scale.

https://www.pbs.org/video/antiques-road ... s-guitars/

Best guitar was probably the one on the far right, Stahl or Maurer. Can't expect too much from "Antiques Roadshow".

I TiVo Antiques Roadshow and fast forward to guitar appraisals. More interesting to me than the vase or light fixture. Thanks for the link!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I love that show, vases and all. What an incredible collection that guy has. I'll be attempting to build a Larson Style guitar soon, hopefully this year.

Don't watch much PBS, but Colin, you aren't missing much. Lots better looking at guys playing the real instruments on Utoob. Wish I had enough gumption to visit the guy in ND, but just the thought of my wife having to haul all the O2 equip from and to the car just makes me want to take a nap.
JF, good to hear you are going to get one going. They are worth it...oak, mebbe?

I do have some really nice QS oak in stock, so that is definitely an option. I just need to resaw it.

one of my bucket list items is to play a Larson brothers guitar of some variety. Always had a soft spot for the Prairie state style guitars.

Maybe one day I'll get to play one of yours Haans. Always admired your work

A local musician found a Stahl/Larson in his grandmother's house. He did not know what it was. It had a lot of issues, top, back and side cracks, missing inlay, and needed a neck reset. Haans you, Marty, and Dakota Dave saw this one at a Podium lunch prior to repair. I am happy to say it turned out great. Really a cool and good sounding guitar.

Wish I could have heard it finished Terry. Probably needs a lot of playing if it was "found".
JF, if you want real fundamental, red, red is good. I always wanted to try a German top and did have one too. One of those "never got round to it" instruments...

Do you mean Red Oak and Red Spruce when you say red/red?

What I have is white oak and have built with it before and love it. But what I was thinking was white oak and red spruce.

Sorry JF, meant white oak. Got confused between mandolins and guitars there for a second, red maple and red spruce is fundamental for mandolins...
