Hello,

Has anyone found a good archive of Martin or just x-bracing pictures? I'm interested in dred, 000, 00. Someone here posted a while back to the UMGF but those pictures seem to be more of bracing layout. I'm more interested in height, width, etc... I'm getting a little stuck in paralysis by analysis but I thought looking at a few pics of bracing would help out some.

Brad

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks MarK, but they work better stuck on back and sides...

It's Brazilian rosewood, as Larson's did it. I preferred not to use artificial materials for the tonal properties in the instruments. The CF "Tone Tubes" didn't contribute to the tone, they were structural.

Hi Colin,
Here is an article Edwinson lutherie might be interested in perusing www.earlymartin.com/fanbraces.html.

There isn't much new under the sun. pizza

With the past few guitars I have been using the 7 fan Torres pattern combined with an X brace that touches the soundboard at the sides and where the X crosses. So far I like it.

I copied Steven Sheriff's "Edwinson" bracing scheme on a couple of guitars and was pleased with the results -- a warm, fairly balanced tone with lots of "mids." I'm using a more conventional bracing pattern on my current build; let's see how it compares.

One of our local luthiers has some very detailed tracings of several of his pre-war Martin and Gibson guitars. If you use the right material and follow closely the results can be spectacular. This is a Red Spruce, Panamanian Rosewood D-28 Herringbone, bracing copied from an original 1937 Herringbone. Other than a Black Locust bridge plate its really close

John Hall has some good information also
