...how incredibly stupid I am. I've got the peghead ready to go for my original design. Roughed out with a rosewood veneer and thinned to 9/16th inch. Though I had not picked out the tuners yet probably something like Grover or Schaller , my usual stuff. Gold maybe perhaps nickel I don't know what ever looks good in the end.

Oh look! These slot head tuners are real nice maybe I'll just use those... Da da dee da da dah dum dum...

It took me a minute to figure out what the problem was. Ouch, sorry about that. I'm confident you can handle this hiccup!

I've always wanted to try a back strap anyway...

Before you added your comment, I thought the back strap was intended all along. I've done that when I changed my mind on the type of tuners to use - switching from Sta-tites to mandolin slothead tuners. it's just part of the creative design process. bliss

I could have but decided instead to hang it on the wall and start again. I think I did that around guitar 25 and was getting co*ky and had my a** handed to me once again...

Ohhhh man!

Maybe we should have a contest :D

I have not yet bent two left sides but I could see it happening some day. I did once to black/white purfling on the right side and white/black purfling on the left oops_sign

We used to do the bonehead of the month threads, I always liked those. They made me feel better.

I too didn't realize that the back-strap was part of the fix. Nice that you have already recovered from the mishap.

So where does the nut go?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

It took me a minuet too, I think because the picture is vertical. The slots for the strings are splayed/angled the wrong direction. Instead of getting wider towards the end it is wider towards the nut.

Maybe I'm being thick in the head, but it looks like the direction of the splay of the slots matches the splay in the template in the first photo.

You know what, you're right. Maybe I don't know what the oops is either. <shrug>

No no no hahahahah.

I was being coy. But the slots are intended to be that way, they will be widend out later. It looks like it's all wrong but it's not, it's intentional. I like it that way for straight pull strings. And I can still make it so the strings don't touch wood.

The 9/16th inch head thickness is the give away. Slot head tuners are for 3/4in head stocks. On a whim I decided to go with a slot head having already roughed out the peg head for paddle head tuners, standard tuners what ever they are called, that require 9/16th inch heads. So I need to add a back strap and another top veneer to make up for the over hang.

If it makes you feel any better I accidentally made a LH Cutaway instead of a RH cutaway because I had a backward day. Checked it 2 or 3 times too. I'm leaning toward just thinning the back of the sides profile down to flat and flipping it over. Expensive Malaysian Ebony! I have no need for a lefty and the top is already braced right handed. Had a big WHOOOOOPS moment when I went to fit the braces to the sides.

It then becomes a “sound wedge” — no kidding, real term as well protected as Linda’s “Manzer wedge”.

"I have not yet bent two left sides but I could see it happening some day."

I made a set of sides where the wood grain for the upper bout of one side was in the lower bout of the other.

" What bends can carefully be unbent and rebent..."

But not those sides... they were laminated with epoxy! [headinwall]

So anyway, the solution for thickening up the peg head. It's a bit awkward but this one is for me.

I'm wondering about this too. How do you make the slot for the nut?
