If you can remove the fingerboard you could continue the decorative veneer theme under it to bring the fingerboard up above the peghead overlay.

So where does the nut go?

I'm wondering about this too. How do you make the slot for the nut?

I always butt the head plate veneer with the fretboard even on up to finishing. Then I use a razor saw and chisel to cut out the slot for the nut.

To me, the fix ends up looking pretty good...

I like the way the slots look with the contrasting veneer. As opposed to some othe mistakes turned into "features" this one looks intentional. [clap]

My question is; with the peghead veneer above the fingerboard are you going to have the vertical space needed to slot the nut to keep the strings close to the frets at the nut end and still have the strings clear the peghead veneer. That was why I commented about possibly putting a veneer under the fingerboard to raise it above the peghead veneer.
But pictures can be deceiving - maybe I'm not seeing it right.

Just barely, but yes.

All of my backstraps came about from a mess up somewhere usually just automatic mode planing to the wrong tuning machine thickness. Now that I see your reverse slope on the slots, it seems like an obvious feature, that I obviously never thought of. Lucky me I am laying out 8 string slotted head stock today.
