I am the very lucky caretaker of a fabulous 1933 Gibson L-00. I am not a very good player and I need all the help I can get, but this guitar does not have any side markers on the neck. I am forced to play it leaning over a bit so I can see the face of the fretboard to get an idea of where I want to be.

How sacrilegious would it be to install a few white dots on the side of the neck? The black paint is all the way to the edge so you don't see a separate fretboard from the side.

I am aware of many of the arguments both ways, but I am wondering if this is/was a common alteration.

Thanks, Ed

I wouldn’t do anything permanent, but I see no reason you can’t paint a dot or two to guide you. I leave to others to suggest what exactly to use.

Liquid Paper and if it is placed onto a shiny surface it should be fairly easy to remove at a later date.

Only add permanent markers if you have no concerns for resale value, cause that will take it down about 50%.

If you go to your local craft store in the scrapbook section you will find adhesive and rub on letter kits for a $1 or two.....the periods make great temp side dots!

Or nail polish. Lots of nice colours available! Apply a drop on the end of a toothpick or or matchstick.

Many nail polishes are lacquer based - they might burn in to the old finish and be semi- permanent.

50%? Wow! You could play in front of a mirror.

I don't think they will last too long but get a office hole punch and punch out some dots on mailing labels like what VFW sends out
