My dream scenario would be to have a stand-alone workshop. However, as my current property isn't conducive to adding another building, I make sawdust in the garage and assemble in an extra bedroom. It sounds like your wife has already cast her vote, so this conversation is basically over.

As the saying goes, happy wife, happy life! [:Y:]

Well, her preferences don’t necessarily translate into an outright veto of an outbuilding or garage as the shop, but yeah, I need for her to be happy with the decision.

I think I could make an outbuilding work if it weren’t too far from the house, and I could make a garage work if we had more than 2 bays. Those parameters limit the acceptable choices, obviously.

Yesterday I drove out to see a place that is a slight bit further from downtown Charleston than we would otherwise look. It had a great outbuilding, but the road to the property was downright dangerous; up a mountain, switchbacks galore, guardrails missing, one lane for part of it, and spots where the road is obviously sinking down the mountain. When a person like me (born in KY, lived in WV for 20 years now) gets scared of the road, that is saying something.

Thanks for all the input. It really does help clarify what we need to consider.
