I meant to take some pics of this the other day. The gear motor is mounted behind the MDF plate and drives a 3/4" shaft. All bearings and hardware were found on Ebay cheap, same for the gear motor. This is a three phase 60RPM gear motor running on a single phase to 3 phase converter, which is nice, but not necessary and easily the priciest portion of this fixture.

The gear motor maxes at the correct speed and has a lot more torque than a geared down motor of higher RPM's. Much more appropriate for this type of task than a standard motor IMO.

This is pretty similar to what I found but if you shop around for a while Ebay a better deal will surely come up. I paid about $90 for mine I believe.

inside the box is just simple mounting to wall/box etc.

Pretty simple, sourcing the right parts was the most difficult part.

This rig is relatively heavy for what it is so keep in mind to mount it accordingly. I'm in a rental so I mounted mine on a couple re-purposed 2" x 4"s and 2" x 6"s fixed into studs with 3" screws.

I tried to find a gear motor like yours but they were all like $600 minimum. On a safely note.... DUDE, get a cable clamp on the wire going into the motor! It'll cost you under .50 cents.

Cool design! M

Haha, yeah I noticed that wire clamp I'd been meaning to get but forgot about since it's out of sight out of mind. I may already have bought it and just forgot about it, I'll have to look. I remember buying a few when I got a new compressor a while back. For the gear motor your best bet is to just shop around on Ebay until you come across a deal. It took me a month or so to get mine but it was worth the wait. Just be sure to read and see how they are wired because a lot of them (usually the less expensive ones) are wired for 3-phase.

I don't know how great this one is...

If you have access to 3PH or have a phase converter these aren't too hard to find, although if you wait and shop for a deal you'll likely find one. Since I got mine they still come up in my Ebay feed thanks to the google spies, it just takes some time to come across a good deal.

Here's where I found my VFD, thanks to the help of another OLF-er. Three phase is nice especially if you end up with a 100 RPM motor that you want to slow down on occasion. Also the SEW EURODRIVE gear motors are a lot cheaper and easier to find for 3PH. Buy the motor first and then select the appropriate VFD for that motor if you go that route.

Charles Fox came up with it. It's a dish with a shaft which has a pulley, and is driven by a belt off a motor. Some thin plywood sides along the perimeter. Hook up some dust collection as your please.
