The second weekend in March is rapidly approaching, when tool dealers and tailgaters from all over the East Coast descend on the Damascus VFD Activity Center to set up shop for the one day old tool sale and auction. This is one of the main outside events in the shop, as students scramble to pick up duplicates of tools they have found indispensable while building, and for the gentlemen to sweeten their bench sets. I hope to be there this year, assuming I can avoid scheduling conflicts with regards to call.

This year, I will remember not to take my hands off a tool I am interested in, at the risk of losing it to another attendee (and especially another denizen of this shop). The pictured plane was pricey, but still $100 less than the modern equivalent. Also shown is the recommended two-handed grip, which I have committed to mastering prior to next month's show. I made the mistake of setting it down to pull my wallet from my bag, and when I reached down to pick it up, money was already changing hands...none of it mine! This year, do not be surprised when I throw an elbow or two...consider this fair warning!

Just a bump to this post to remind those in the mid-Atlantic states (DE, MD, VA, WV) that the PATINA show and sale is less than two weeks away. We'll be tailgating in the early AM to sell off some tools, to include a wet grinder system, some clamps, and whatever else Messrs. Morelli, Robinson, Verhoeven, and Steinhorn show up with that morning.

Anyone else from the area planning on attending? It might be nice to place a face with the online OLF persona!

Major old tool envy. We have a much smaller version up here in the Great White North, but I hear great things about the Patina shows/auctions.

Have fun.

I'll be set up in the field by 6:00 with a broad assortment of stuff. I have a red Prius with flames on the side

I had to de-tune the electric motors to get through inspection.

Shouldn't it also have sparks on the side?

Just a bump up to remind those in the area of the PATINA event this coming Saturday.

Any old tool nuts here know Allan Foster? He's my late brother, a major seller/buyer there at one time.

I did not have the pleasure, Mr. Foster, but the boss believes he likely purchased several tools from your brother in years past, and fondly recalls the association. I am so very sorry for your loss, and wish you and your family well.

It was nice meeting Mr. Ed Minch (Ruby50) and seeing his hot-rodded hybrid up close (we were stopped leaving Damascus by sheriff's deputies looking for a 'red car with decals on the side going way too fast'...probably just a coincidence). Mr. Minch had a small 'tailgating' display area set up, and I almost bought a very nice #3 from him before my boss swooped in and purchased it for the shop set. I may very well have to employ some unconventional tactics to separate plane from boss, as the more I looked at the tool, the more I realized that Mr. Minch had steered me towards a splendid little tool that fits quite nicely in my smaller hands.

As usual, PATINA was quite a bit of fun, and meeting another OLF'er was the Luxardo cherry in my Manhattan (or possibly the flamed orange peel in my Old Fashioned...I tend to think highly of both).

Had a high time selling tools at Patina - best sale I have had in a long time. I am sure Woody will have no problem getting that plane away from the bossman.

The seller next to me had a Sand-Right sanding station with a 3/4 HP Baldor motor on it in excellent condition. It was a stand with the motor mounted at the back and a pulley arrangement to the twin spindles. I can't find it on the Sand-Right page, but the seller said it was $1200 new. He was asking $400 and I knew I could get it for less, so I called my daughter who runs her own shop in Brooklyn (brooklynlutherie.com), but she was happy with her arrangement. It sold for $300.

Something for everyone.

I can’t believe I’m admitting this, and if anyone tells my wife, I’ll deny it. But I actually have all the tools I need.

The new Lee Valley catalogue comes out? Nada.

I go cruising an old tool show? I come home with nothing.

My tool mojo has deserted me completely.

Surely, there’s a 12 step program for something like this.
