Continuing the blanket issues. I have had 2 blankets develop hot spots and burn the wood in small areas, 1 square inch or so. Each time I put burn marks in two sides before I clued in and each time the burn marks followed the blanket location. Maybe I am a bit rough with my blankets.

I think they have a lifespan. The one before this one had cold spots. Kept breaking easy sides in the same spots, turned out there was no heat in localized areas. I'm just going to replace everything...

I have a very thin protective top slat, like .007, works well and does not seem to make bending any more difficult.
I’ve always used two blankets since seeing John Mayes doing it years ago.
Still have the controllers I got from LMI 14 years ago. !

Interesting. Do you run the blankets independently through separate PID controllers

Yes, I have a meat thermometer between the blanket top slat and crank them both to high, bend when there is a lot of steam (around 260 for me), usually finish the bend around 330 or so and then just sit there and turn the power strip on and off to keep the temp around 300 for 12-15”. Controllers stay on high the whole time.

Just one of a million ways that work just fine but theoretically two blankets could give more even heating.[/quote]

I used to use a thermometer like that. But it would leave dents in the wood. I have a volt meter with a thermocouple input. The only sizable part is the thermocouple bead (and the lead wire). Been looking for a film based one. I definitely like the temperature measurement made at the wood surface.

Sparks and arcs can be exciting, especially in a dust prone environment. Keep an extinguisher handy!!!

Wish I was surprised I didn't think of it

Well, there ya go! :) It did not occur to me either. But still. You have a blanket short, It will "pop" up again.
