I’ve used Bocote which worked out fine. Would the large pores in Padauk cause an issue as a FB?

This is a 12 to the body short scale 00 fanfret I did about 3 years ago. The owner loves it and it's holding up really well especially considering how he treats it. Personally I'm not a fan aesthetically. It's a major color statement!

Twice I have used jatoba and I really like the way it works and looks for a FB/bridge. I'm not good enough to tell you any actual information about its impact on tone as a bridge wood. I really like it and am on the look out for more. I'm making two guitars right now, one will be jatoba again and the other will be osage orange for the FB and Bridge. I'll let you see them someday if I ever finish ;)

Did you pore fill the FB? It seems you could pore fill, sand it all the way back and then oil it up as usual and it would look pretty good.

As I recall I tried using CA to pore fill the FB. The idiot move was doing it after fretting. I think if I pore filled prior to cutting the fret slots it would have turned out much better (always learning!).

If you're considering paduc, maybe you should look for some bloodwood. I've used it for several fretboards, but never a bridge. Mesquite is a little lighter in color, and would probably work fine as a fretboard and bridge. Here's bloodwood:

Padauk will turn deep-reddish/brown after about a year if not lacquered. And after several if lacquered.... So with and oiled or waxed bridge and fingerboard it wont be such a bold statement after a while... I have a stool that has turned if you want to see what it will look like.... PM me your email.

The pores should'nt be a problem... wenge is just as bad....

I am bringing in 500 Indian Laurel finger boards and bridges as an option for those that want stay away from Rosewood. I have some back and side sets in this wood but no fingerboards and bridges so looking forward to seeing how they look, feel and sound. I will keep you posted!

I've used padauk for fingerboard and bridge with no issues. Did not pore fill the fingerboard.

I have used it, seems fine, feels fine.
I'm not keen on the open grain though.

I'm going to try some wood I've harvested in my yard..Manzanita. I milled some fingerboard and bridge blanks. The darker red one was sanded to 20" radius and wiped with Howards. Haven't tried to slot or fret one yet. I attached a pic of one of my woodpiles. If you want some, bring a truck. Makes good firewood.

We’ve used Paduk for FB and bridges A LOT at Palomar College. Not me personally, because I am not a fan of the color it becomes after a couple of years. But I can attest that it works just fine.

@CarlD I thought Manzanita is mildly toxic. Grubbing it out I was always warned to wear gloves and we never burned it. No issues?

Pau Ferro makes a nice fingerboard if you can work with it. It has good color and close grain and is reasonably hard. It takes a good polish.

I've been burning it for 20 years and other than leaving significant chunks of charcoal it's worked great, real hot fire. I looked it up on a couple of wood databases and there were no warnings of toxicity. I found some recipes for preparing the berries to eat and the bear and coyote poop around here contains a lot of it too. I do wear gloves and protective clothing while clearing it as the broken branches are real hard and sharp. It has caused quite a bit of damage to the tractor when it fights back, sheet metal, hydraulics and tires.

I have a small scrap of Manzanita. If you can dry it and keep it from twisting it seems like it would make a fine fingerboard. If I lived closer I would certainly raid your wood pile (with permission bliss ).

Clay, most of what I have was dead and dry for many years. Clearing was (and still is) done for fire protection. A 6" x 24" log weighs 20 Lbs +. If you pay for shipping I'll send one (or more). Maybe I'll mill some more blanks and list them in the classifieds when I get time. You guys let me know if you're interested (and how much they might go for).
