So what might be peoples thoughts in general on Indian ebony? Im wondering if people have found the total characteristics of Indian ebony different then African ebony? Or is it more prone to cracking for bridges or fretboard use? Seems like Gaboon is getting expensive for the all black and qtr sawn so would like to explore alternatives. People say it bends easier. for bindings however I haven't had any issues with bending Gaboon.

I was talking to an Indian supplier and he said that the Indian ebony was dark brown. I had bought a few ebony Bridges on eBay once that turned out to be dark brown so I assume that's what I was seeing.

I paid a fortune for LMI's Indian ebony binding. It definitely bends easier. I didn't break a single piece. Under finish, it looks as black as any other ebony I've used.

What GLen H said. Bends like a dream. Very dark brown but turns black under finish. It's expensive but worth a few extra bucks because it is so much easier to work than African ebony. I have only tried the binding so can't comment on using it for bridges or other parts.

I cannot comment on ebony for backs and sides as I've never used it before but I did just purchase a bunch of Indian Ebony fretboards and they are jet black and beautiful.

Has anyone seen any data online about testing the different musical properties of the two?
