Cheap import granite reference plate. The ones about the size of a sheet of paper cost about $40 or less. Larger costs more. |

I found some granite for free at a store that cuts countertops. They cut out the spot for a sink and often toss the piece. |

Just get a good piece of 1/4" or 1/2" float glass. It will work fine, and is dead flat. |

I went to a glass and mirror place and they had an off-cut of 3/4" float glass 12" by 20" with a few chips on one corner and got it for ten bucks. One of the best investment I've made. Brent |

I have both of the options mentioned above (granite and float glass). Not sure why, but I prefer using the glass. |

I got a piece of plate glass from a shop that I used to get glass and mirrors from. I told them what I needed it for, and they asked what size and thickness, cut it from a larger scrap, ground the edges, and wouldn't take a nickel for it even when I offered to pay. A lot of these places are more than happy to see a piece of scrap get put to good use. Alex |

Woodcraft 28 $ surface granite plate . I find using glass a real pita. I have an off cut of granite from yard sale but it/s not dead flat good for cambered planes |
