NO WONDER MINE ALWAYS SKATES UP! doh! Wow thanks David! Wow! I can see! Yeah, that was always a strong caution to the newbies, who, no matter how pointed the warning, would inevitably skate the block up and over the brand new frets. After pulling a few sets of freshly laid frets, the lesson would eventually stick. We eventually switched to double cut files xxxx instead of single ///// which both prevented that problem and dramatically reduced the time on that task. Win win. Ed, at Collings there was a piece of plastic binding glued to the edge of the file to give a new guy another chance. But from an employers point of view, the harsh lesson is probably worth more in the long run. My cheap Ace hardware double cuts have one cut much deeper than the other so they still have yin and yang tendencies. I guess they're more like 1 1/2 cut. Time is why I have matching pairs. coarse gets it done. Just a few swipes with the single cut makes it pretty. Ski jumps on electrics too. If your taking .015" off at the last fret, your gonna need a nasty file to start. The kind on work release with a long record of violence. Otherwize you won't get to dinner on time. |

That's smart. We ground the edges down with a grinder, it was a boring and annoying chore. |
