I'm using some nice quilted Narra and some spider figured Padauk and I thought that lemon yellow shellac might enhance the colors a bit- and it does. However, it goes on very unevenly and has a lot of particles in it. Never seen shellac like that. I usually use blonde or black and I'vc have no issues with those. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just not a very good shellac. I ran it through a paint strainer but that just grabbed the large particles. |

Sounds like not very good and possibly old shellac. There is a shellac supplier who's name escapes me now who is very keen to promote the idea that shellac needs to be fresh just like milk. I used some of his stuff and it was the best that I ever used. I'll know his name if someone else brings it up, he was west coast and has visited the OLF before. |

I think it's just a crappy product. Just mixed up some more of another brand and it came out as expected. The yellow stuff still had insect parts in the bag. Not very clean or pure at all and I couldn't see through the jar. |

I get mine from shellac finishes run by Vijay in San Diego. He puts a "use by" date on his shellac, or used to. He's a super helpful guy if you need advice on one of his products. |

That's who I was dealing with, thanks Steve. Yeah he's great and very helpful. He also makes the case, successfully in my view that a shellac finish can be water stain resistant too. |

Lee Valley use to carry orange. I now use it for a base coat on most all Maple as it does a great job of grain popping but doesn't really go to orange. But it does warm up the grain nicely. I see they no longer carry it. If you would like some Joey, PM me your address and I'll shoot you a bag. I have more than I can use. I get best results spraying it with my gun dialled down quite a bit. Cheers |

Both are processed in Germany but cheaper from Wood Essence, and they carry the orange. http://www.woodessence.com/Dry-Shellac-P54C13.aspx I bought some of the blonde flakes, and they dissolved well. I also get shellac from Vijay at Shellac Finishes. He’s local to me and I pick it up at his house. I don’t know if it is great shellac or not. I don’t have enough experience. But I’ve always been pleased with the product and the service. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
