I want to make a jig out of plexi for cutting a channel for a back strip. Any thoughts on the best way to cut the plexi? Or should I just stick with Baltic ply? Thanks in advance Steve |

Polycarbonate sheet is a better choice, Steve. Plexi cracks and shatters easily, IIRC. I cut it on the table saw. If I'm ripping poly that is under 1/4" thick, I'll double stick tape a sacrificial piece of wood on top of it to keep it from riding up on the blade. There's a shop near me that sells all kinds of plastics. They usually have a rack with odds and ends pieces, as well as metal and aluminum in all shapes and sizes. Alex |

Plexi routs well. If you use a table saw to cut it an ATB (alternate top bevel) blade with a high tooth count might be a good choice. |

I like BB partly because if you accidently run a bit in to it it's easily repairable. I also think it might be more ridged in 1/2" or 3/4" thickness. Of course it depends on the overall width you make the guide/jig . I just made one of 1/4" and 10" wide to cut a sliding dovetail on a piece of furniture & it stayed ridged. I guess 10" wide of plastic is ridged too. |

Yes I would go for polycarbonate or poly acrylate. Machine with ordinary woodworking tools, though I find using a disk sander can leave a bit of melted material on the edge - possibly because it's time to change the abrasive! Dave |
