| Post subject: | Fast Set Epoxy ? |
Good Morning! Any epoxy experts here today?! I'm in a bit of a rush to get some finish on one. I normally use regular epoxy to glue on the FB. I recently picked up some Armor Coat quick set. I used it on the truss rod spline. It appears to behave the same as most regular set epoxies other than the set time. IOW it appears to be pretty good stuff. Does anyone happen to have any valid reasons why I wouldn't want to use the quick set to glue on a fingerboard? Thanks!!! |

It's probably fine so long as it has enough open time to get it all spread, parts aligned and clamped up properly before it kicks over... Working with the 30 second stuff is pretty darned hairy.... That stuff will kick over before you get it half spread... |

I have found the quicker epoxies to be very brittle and fail at some point fairly quickly...when I want real strength I use the traditional stuff that sets overnight...as a note even the fast setting stuff takes overnight to really cure...either way I pretty much think of the 5 minute type to be cr@p |

I was taught by Cyndy Burton (Jeff Elliott's partner) to use Devcon 5 minute epoxy for pore fill. She applies it in small areas and works it in with a very dull straight edge razor blade and ultimately pulls it off with the same blade. She said the devcon is the only product she has liked and lives in fear of them changing the formula. |

The 5 minute epoxy isn't as strong as the regular epoxy, but with the relatively large surface area of the fingerboard that shouldn't be much of a problem. I don't think it is as heat resistant either, so if you keep your guitar in the trunk of your car in the summer it might not be a good choice. |

why epoxy? Regular wood glue does fine I stopped epoxy on the 2nd build. |

I've been using Tower Hobbies profesional epoxies 6min, 30min, and 60 min for about thirty years now --- furniture, general wood working, high powered model aircraft and musical instruments and have never seen a glue joint fail prior to "wood" failure. I simply do not use the $ store version. Couple of other comments --- no matter what kind of glue that is used a guitar should never be stored in a car trunk or even a locked car in warm weather. I've tried Devcon as a pore filler and found that it turns "yellow green" when exposed to UV. |
