I'm heading for Scotland later this month and wondered if there are any builders or shops I should check out while I am there.

Any anyone recommend any?

We have a few. Top my head - Steel String makers - Glasgow is the home of Moon Guitars, Taran Guitars is in Fife. Also Bailey guitars make guitars (Electric and SS) and offer courses.
There's several classical makers too.
Where are you visiting, how long?
Welcome to visit my shop (and wouldn't be the first)
Also Murmac is an OLF member, and may be up for a visit - he's in Edinburgh. He supplies some luthier tools and does repairs.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I'll be there Aug 18-Sept 2. I'll start off with a 5 days in Edinburgh and then head to Skye for a week, then make my way back to Edinburgh before going home.

I'll check out the suggestions and introduce myself to the OLF members mentioned.

I would check out some of the great builders like Aberlour or Oban.
Maybe Colin could share his local knowledge.
