Anyone here with actual experience exporting their work to Japan? I have a possible commission for someone residing there and need to know what materials I can and cannot use..... |

I've shipped flamenco guitars to Japan. Encountered no problems, the duty is steep but the customer pays that. |

I haven't shipped anything there for two or three years so things could have changed. |

I shipped one electric guitar to Japan. Also didn't have to do any unusual paperwork. Mind you, there was no rosewood or pearl on that guitar. Japan is of course a signatory to CITES, so if the guitar contains listed species you'll have to follow the same procedures you would sending to any other international destination, i.e. get an export permit from fish&wildlife. |

I ship to Japan a couple of times a year. No paperwork required if no CITES species except the usual Homeland Security number needed for shipments over $2500.00 in value. I avoid using any CITES listed wood. It is easy to substitute species. The $2500.00 number is free online from the government, but almost impossible to fill out the forms correctly. I pay an outfit in Chicago, Simplified Trade Solutions online, $35.00 to get me the number. Well worth it and they usually supply it by the end of the working day. Good luck! |
