| Post subject: | what kind of pearl is on this antique guitar? |
One of my favorite early guitars is this Viennese guitar, circa 1830, attributed to Johann Georg Stauffer or a very young apprentice C. F. Martin. It has these pearl pieces around it, called "thumprint" inlays, and I was wondering what kind of pearl it looks like to all of you. I think it might be alternating Green Abalone and Gold MOP, but I have no idea. What do all of you think? Sorry about the Getty images watermark on the first one, it was the best full body image I could find. |

I think your'e right. Although sometimes gold can be more gold. There are so many different types of shell. Who knows where they sourced it... If you are trying to get an close match, you could ask Depaul. |

Might not be gold MOP as the instrument is undoubtedly varnished. I'm thinking white MOP or maybe both... |

Rosette looks like white MOP to me. The light colored thumbprint inlays may be the pale backside that some abalone blanks have (especially green abalone, which means they're probably all green). Look at the corners where some color is showing. |

Anyone else notice that the pics are of two different guitars? Look at the headstocks, also the wear patterns are different. Slightly different inlays on the bridges as well. |

They're just two variants of each other made by the same person (either Stauffer or Martin) in Viennese style, same measurements too. |
