I've got a swamp ash body that I want to finish like this. Any suggestions on how they went about it? I've tried a low sheen black lacquer without grain filler and basically now I've got a black finish with a bunch of dimples around the end grain. Not what I was hoping for. ![]() Thanks, Conor |

That's really cool. I would try rubbing on a flat black stain and top coat with a matte lacquer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Well, obviously - no grain filler. I've seen amateur stuff that was just rattle can black on raw wood that looked almost like this Tele. |

some wood bleaches if left on too long will eat away the softer grain and give a low relief to the surface. Sand blasting and sanding back might also work. |

There is no end grain on that guitar so you might not be able to get that kind of a look on a solid body guitar. I would try some black stain followed by Arm-R-Seal satin (General Finishes). |

To get that effect the black has to be applied very thin so as to not fill any of the grain at all. |

I've seen fellers use a wire brush on the lumber to cut out soft grain to accentuate it. |
