I hereby petition the powers that be (that'd be you Lance) to create one more category for builders.

We have amateurs, professionals, semi-professionals...

Well, I'm pleased to announce that I'm now a full-time hobbyist/amateur.

Surely that deserves some kind of special status, doesn't it?

Joking aside, this is just me expressing my glee at finally being retired from my paying gig of 30-some-odd years (some of them very odd).

I am incredibly lucky that I've stumbled into guitar building. Other guys retire and drive their wives nuts hanging around the house. And you can only golf so much.

Me? I've discovered this incredible craft, the learning curve for which is basically infinite. And not unlike my old job, I face brand new challenges every day. The really wonderful thing is that I'm part of a community that shares those challenges, as well as some of the solutions to them.

So thank you to all of you who have helped me along with this journey/process. I hope I can at least partially return the favour to some of the new guys coming along.

Steve

Congratulations Steve! I'm there too... I agree with your comments on the craft and echo your sentiment on the OLF. I feel the same way.

I'm glad you're living the life, Steve! Maybe if I retired again, I'd have more guitar time!

Alex

Nice! I'm sure I'll carry this obsession with me into retirement one day when that comes too. I type this wearing cloths that smell like rosewood dust. It gets in the blood for sure.

Congratulations Steve! I'm a full time amateur too and have a permanent grin pasted on my face because of it. Best job I've EVER had.

Welcome to retirement, ain't it great?

I'm a little over 2 years into mine.
Funny I thought I would double my production to 2 a year but it went down to about 1 every 3 years.

Congratulations Steve!
Perhaps I'll get to make a post like that someday in the not too distant future.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
