Looks like pine to me. ID from photos is tough.

Looks like "Sugar Pine" 1/4 sawn boards like that along with Genuine Mahogany were and are used by model makers. Very stable stuff and I really enjoy the fragrance it leaves in the shop after we size it on the table saw -- a little soft but really fun to work.

Even before reading Ken's post I was thinking the same thing - sugar pine. As mentioned it is hard to ID wood from pictures. Sugar pine is usually soft and easy to carve. I would worry less about the species and more about the stiffness of the piece in hand.
