I contacted the place today looking for some birdseye maple neck blanks, and was a little shocked a the price he quoted me. Has anyone had any good experiences with this place? For that matter, has anyone ever heard of this place? |

.... that's what I thought. $500 for an electric neck blank seemed a tad high... which made the wood over $533 / bf. |

I'm not sure what the mentality of the owner is. I think he's trying to live in the past where you try to make a killing by selling a few things, as opposed to making less per item and selling tons of stuff. In the end, I don't know how he survives, except that I suspect he really only wants to deal with wholesale, and not retail. That may be the reason he gives over the top prices on things. I had a friend who used to live in Boston who also tried to do business with them, and my friend basically said the guy is insane, or crazy, or both. lol |

Reminds me of a story about a department in our complex. The manager does not like to take one construction project and only wants to do the maintenance. When people ask him what he would charge to get a job done he give an unreasonably high quote. On one occasion the people accepted it. When asked about it by one of the guys he said, 'we'll just wait them out' (they will get frustrated and find someone else to do it). |

Another example of "get lost price". Better to just be up front, and say that you don't do sales under X number of pieces. That way, if you ever are in a position to place a large order, you might give them a call. Alex |

I tend to think he was actually serious about the price quote. He gave me a sob story about about having to trudge the giant forests of trees to find just the right ones, and staying in sleezy motels along the way. Made it sound like that's what he had to charge to make a dime off the wood. It's total B.S., but it had the intended results, which was to not sell the wood to a customer. I also got the feeling that if I were a really famous luthier with a website, the price might have dropped... so no, I won't be buying wood from him anytime in the future either. Folks...remember this. This is NOT the way to do business with a community of customers who are widespread and buy typically only a few items at a time. During my conversation, when I said that I could get a finished birdseye maple neck from Warmoth, ever a really nice one for a lot less than what he wanted for the premium quality blank, he scoffed and said their stuff was crap compared to his and I could never get something as good from them. Maybe not, but they stand a lot more chance of me buying something than he does. Yep...crazy guy. |

Don, check with Bow River tonewoods, they might have some birds eye maple neck blanks kicking around and the strong greenback to our funny money might just save you some change too. |
