Ed, I just have to say that although I dislike dread-knots, I really admire your style of building with a limited number of tools and the clean workmanship. In looking through all the photos, I can see that you have a well thought out system with a lot of thought going into making things work for you. I really don't think I would call it a dread-knot as it really has more pinch in the waist. Not at all like my wife's D-35, which is full "sackdress" with absolutely no sash belt at the waist... Very nice work and a beaut of a uke. |

Thanks Haans - nice of you to say that. I called it a Dreadnaught because that is what it was called at the time - both the guitar and uke where just fattened up at the waist and both in 1916 by Ditson. Martin would not even build the guitar version as a special order through the 20's because they thought it had too much bass, but then when things got too hot, they adopted the shape. I recently read a promotional piece by Martin about the 100th anniversary of the Dreadnaught and in it they bend over backwards to make you think they loved this shape from the beginning. My daughter has a mid-20's mahogany Type 0 Martin with wooden friction pegs and she is bringing it tomorrow so we can compare the sound. I will build more! Ed |
