That looks pretty doable. When installing new frets, do they go in sideways as well?

Installation is standard pressing from the top (with my new fret caul set of course ;) ).

Just out of curiosity, could you tell us how they are installed sideways at the factory and why? After the fretting I've done, pushing one in from the side sounds like pushing a rope!

I would emphasize "were" installed, rather than "are", just to be clear that they quit doing this in the early 80's.

Can't see much in this photo, but they used a caul connected by cables to a foot lever, press down and it would pull the fret in to the slot.

Dan has some much more clear drawings of the system they used in Guitar Player Repair Guide.
