Post subject:  Blotchy stain on Padauk

Hello,

I had a large (40"x13"2") piece of Padauk that I was having trouble resawing. I took the advice of an OLF member and ripped the board down so that I could resaw the back and sides separately. That gave me the control I needed to get it resawn (thanks WilliamS).

Now that I have it resawn, the boards are blotchy looking. See an example in the pic below. Will the whole board darken and even this out over time? All the pieces I cut (2 backs 2 sides and some headplate pieces) have the same blotchy look to varying degrees. It seems to go all the way through the wood.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That's a shame. Possibly the first signs of decay if the tree was on the ground for a bit or maybe mineral stains. Either way it's not likely to go away. A burst of some sort might be the answer.

Wet it with naphtha to see what it will look like under finish. Personally I do not find that look troubling, but I can see how others would.

Here is a shot of one of the backs already joined. This is a real bummer. :(

Try setting a set in the sun for a week or more. Padauk darkens quite a bit from ultraviolet light and this may help even out the blotchiness. It will go from orange to a brownish maroon.
Another possibility would be to try staining (gasp!) the wood to get a more even color.

I will give that a try. It's a shame to not do something with this set.

I'll burn it in the fire pit over the weekend before I stain it. laughing6-hehe

If you don't like stain there is always paint...... bliss

It would be a shame not to use the wood for some sort of instrument. Book matched discoloration might be the next "Big" thing in tone wood, in the same vein as bog oak and ancient sitka. You just need to figure out some reason that the discoloration enhances the sound potential of the wood.

This is pretty typical of Padauk. It will darken and even out to some degree. Expose to light. Doesn't have to be sunlight.

Would it have to be a UV light? Or just any light? My shop is lit with fluorescent lights.

Colin, I visit Dundee a couple times a year for work. Maybe I'll bring you the second set, if Dundee is close. :)

I like the look! I would use that set in a heartbeat. I hope the look grows on you - Padauk is great stuff.
