Seems like the results could be quite subjective. Might be a good job for an amateur or semi pro with a lot of free time though because fp has the "keep working on it" factor.

His name is escaping me at the moment but the gentleman who had the definitive FP toot on line and is in the Chicagoland area IIRC had a son who back in the day was offering this.

We do French polish finishes for other builders here at my shop. Our regular customers include Ervin Somogyi, Leo Buendia, and Julian Gaffney. The woman who does our finishing has French polished over 1,000 high end, luthier built guitars. We also do finish repairs and refinishing, but only French polish. For lacquer finishes, Addam Stark is just down the road.

Next I'm simply curious and I know what nitro, poly, urethane finishers tend to charge but I've never had a view of what an expert FPer charges AND knowing as I do the time necessary to do FP very well.... what's this cost?

We charge $650 for most guitars, a little more for some extremely ornate models.

I had a chance to look at a new Eric Reid classical guitar a few weeks ago when it came into the shop for a dealer-warranted finish touch-up. The shared opinion of the more experienced here was that the French polish finish was stellar - some of the thinnest, most consistent work these gentlemen had seen on a classical in years and marvelously well done. The retouch work on the neck - damaged by the owner's untrimmed thumbnail on his left hand - was quickly done and the instrument returned to service.

Bravo, Mr. Reid! A lovely instrument and a beautifully applied finish!

No, I use shellac buttons for my finishes. Same stuff they used on gym and ballroom floors before poly was invented. Very tough and durable.
