In high school, I made drumsticks from black locust saplings that weren't much bigger than the stick. A whole tree is remarkably strong, because the main cleavage is right through the middle, perpendicular to the rings (think splitting firewood radially). I don't think the drummer in our band ever broke one of those. Of course, the obvious answer is to split out the blanks before turning them. |
