What tricks do you have for securing plastic binding on a sideport sound hole? My LMII binding tape tends to tear when pulling it tight because it's such a tight curve (~2.5" oval).

What do you use to get the binding secured while the contact cement dries?

Strips of glassfibre mono filament tape are really hard to tear.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Indeed.

That's why I make them circular on the rare occasions I do them, and hold the binding in place with a softwood cone (available from yachting places where they have various sizes and are used as emergency bungs). Scarf the binding ends rather than butt them.
