Hello, it depends on species, country of origin etc. You can buy everything from everywhere, but you have to take care of the propper paperwork. For example: Cocobolo out of south america, Ziricote from mexico can be all sold and bought. Amazon rosewood also. The best places to buy cants are at the moment more Asian countries and also in Europe you can find some nice wood. From India you can buy sets, exporting cants, halflogs, beams is very difficult and more or less forbidden.... Cheers, Alex |

Ed, I tried to by EIR Lumber from my supplier in the past. I have some larger pieces that we called parquet flooring that I needed for some tuned drums but nothing large enough for top sets of guitars. As has been mentioned India has a rule to preserve their export trade and maximize local economies so no rough lumber can be exported. I wanted some archtop blacks and even those had to be very roughly bandsawn into a guitar like shape to export them. So it is not as easy as it seems.....that is my experience anyway. Shane |

Ya, I almost never see Indian rw lumber here. Lots o bolivian though! Anything on apx2 needs 2 b finished product. I dont think irw is on it, but not sure. It's easy to find out on the website though. |

Quote: I may have hooked into 12/4 billets from days long past... Species matters. If you are talking about Indian RW, then there are no CITES import/export restrictions. Since the 1970's, India has controlled what rosewood is exported from their country, but it is not on the CITES list. In general, the only 'Indian' rosewood lumber I see on the market today is Indonesian. It is the same species, but the different growing conditions produce a wood that looks different, smells different, and works different. |

For EIR from India, much relevant info from the Gibson thread of 2011... viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=33311&start=150 Especially pages 6-12, posts by David Berkowitz and Chuck Erikson. Lots to sort through, but I think India's rules were that no rosewood can be exported at > 6mm thickness, unless it's a finished product (different tariff classifications). Then Lacey is relevant, saying the US will respect other countries export laws. But there were ambiguities in tariff interpretations and practices that created a mess. Has any progress been made since then? |
